(2014-October 6-8) 20 Lakes Basin and the Shepherd Crest Saddle. Inyo National Forest, California
Began this three day trip arriving and parking at the southern shore of Saddlebag Lake in the early afternoon. I hiked the well maintained (and rocky) trail along the western shore of Saddlebag and continued for a short time, passing several beautiful lakes along the way. I knew Steelhead and Cascade Lakes would be ideal for photographing North Peak, so I set up camp on a rocky ledge above Steelhead. The weather was warm and calm, unlike most of my previous trips to the Sierra in September and October. In the evening, the full Moon rose and illuminated the surrounding terrain. I couldn't help myself in taking several photographs of my lit up tent with the stunning lake scene and North Peak in the background.
I awoke before sunrise and captured numerous dawn pics from the eastern shores of Steelhead Lake and then I scrambled up to Cascade Lake, just in time to catch the Sun striking North Peak. What a beautiful morning. I headed back to my tent, packed a lunch and some gear and then headed off to the southern portion of Shepherd Crest. WOW, what a view into Yosemite National Park with Sheep Mountain and Upper McCabe Lake in the foreground, just magnificent!!! I took some self portraits among the the rocks and then headed back to my tent. I packed up camp and hiked to Greenstone Lake, where I set up again. Had some light hail in the afternoon and a beautiful sunset over Mount Conness and North Peak. Got up pre-dawn and captured some nice shots of the scenery and headed back to my vehicle for the long drive back to Alpine California. Great short trip!!!
