(2012-January 29-31) Death Valley Trip-Aguerreberry Point, Badwater, Stovepipe, Mosaic and Fall Canyons, California.
Just a quick trip to Death Valley to get the sun setting and rising somewhere beautiful. I had thought of several locations to possibly hit for catching the sunrises/sunsets on this trip, however after getting pulled over by a nice Highway Patrol Officer near Shoshone, I got some good advice about a place called Aguerreberry Point on the west side of the park (Panamint Range), so I kept that in mind.
I caught the first sunset in Badwater, which I was not overly impressed with (awesome area, just not the ideal weather). I then Xterra camped in the desert somewhere and awoke about 4AM and drove to Aguerreberry Point. Very nice sunrise and I was impressed with this area, just as the nice Highway Patrol Officer had told me. A lot of color in the sky and the Sun "Peeked" at me for that nice sunburst coming over the horizon. I then drove to the base of Telescope Peak and Mohagany Flat and scouted that area for a bit, next to some charcoal kilns.
Then I headed back toward the Stovepipe Wells area and hiked the length of Mosaic Canyon and Fall Canyon. Mosaic was beautiful and Fall was average. Later in the afternoon, the wind kicked up and there was no possibility of capturing photographs during sunset. I Xterra camped in the desert somewhere and awoke at about 4AM. I hiked out into the Stovepipe Dunes and captured a decent shot of the sunrise. I then called it a day and headed home.
